IWD Feminist Books

Happy International Women’s Day!

International Women’s Day, commemorated annually on 8th March, is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural and professional achievements of women across the world, while also highlighting the on-going need to tackle political, social and economic gender inequalities. First established in Copenhagen in 1911, it is today recognised globally by communities and nations, and marked by local events, rallies and campaigns that are intended to raise the profile of women’s issues.

There are lots of ways that you can get involved and show your support on the day (see https://www.internationalwomensday.com/GetInvolved for ideas). But if IWD puts you in the mood for reading some inspirational feminist literature this weekend, then you are in luck! Here at Magdalene College Library, we have added a fantastic range of new books on subjects including gender, sexuality and intersectionality to our reclassified W.5 Welfare sub-section (located in the Middle Room of Left Cloister). These include recently-published essay collections by Roxanne Gay and Rebecca Solnit, Animal by Sarah Pascoe, The Guilty Feminist by Deborah Francis-White, and Feminists Don’t Wear Pink And Other Lies by Scarlett Curtis, as well as classic feminist works such as Fat is a Feminist Issue by Susie Orbach.

A selection of our new titles on feminism

Don’t forget that additional texts on Gender Studies may be found in other sections of the library. Section 3.D. (Sociology), in particular, contains a number of important works on feminism, including Black Feminist Thought by Patricia Hill Collins, We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Nogzi Adichie, The Female Eunuch by Germaine Greer, and Living a Feminist Life by Sara Ahmed. You can find a selection of these, together with shelfmark details, in the list below.

Happy reading!
